Labor Day 2009

Kerry invited a group of us over to enjoy the pool area around her pool for a BBQ the Sunday before Labor Day. We had a great time eating a picnic in the rain, playing in the pool, relaxing in the hot tub and injuring ourselves pretending to be Shamu!!

Aluminum foil limbo....it's all the craze!

The weather was a little less than perfect (a little rainy), but at least it prevented it from being blazing hot and we didn't get burned!
The girls enjoying either Hound Dog or Li Hing Margaritas!

Everyone brought yummy food to share (grilled peaches with ice cream, blue cheese and bacon potato salad and spinach salad were among my favorites) and we literally stuffed ourselves!

Netty's guacamole is famous among the CRED circuit- it's always prepared fresh with love!

Here's Annette demonstrating examples of her OCD......

Pool games are always fun and the big slide turned into the funniest pose contest!
Paula wins the slide-off with her Showgirl Pose!

While slinking across the tiled wall like a sea lion was fun, trying to slide across it like Shamu proved to be a little more of a challenge (tile against skin......the marks have almost healed!).
So, I know it's dark, but here is Ben, Cristi, me, Paula and Annette striking a pose for the sea lion portion of the show!

It was so much fun- I really enjoy being able to act like a kid! Thanks Kerry for letting us invade your home (I didn't even break anything this time!)!

Wow!

Hello everyone!
I have so much to catch up on and I promise to work on posted pictures from the last couple of weeks soon.
Just wanted everyone to know that had my apartment packed up and my stuff is currently on it's way to Miami. I made it safely to Germany and am enjoying spending time with my family (which means there will be lots of photos to share!).
Thanks again to everyone who helped me out with moving- I couldn't have done it without everyone's help and thoughtfulness (miss you guys already!).
Stay tuned.........

Pau Hana in Chinatown

After finishing up a manuscript draft and correcting site descriptions for the cruise report, we celebrated the end of the work week, otherwise known as pau hana, and the upcoming three day weekend with some fun in Chinatown.

Doing the Paula pose!

We started with some HH martinis at Indigo’s (gotta love chocolate martinis) and then headed out for pizza and Boilermakers.

The K's- Kevin and Kerry!

Jeff and Annette- check out the new do!

Funny how pizza brings out the silly side in people!

Let's race.......

Paula lost.

It was First Friday, so the Chinese drummers and dancing dragons were out!

It's not in front of the fountain (sorry Sarah), but we did get a group photo (Jeff, Annette, Kevin, Paula and Kerry)!

Where there's a spotlight, there's Kevin and Paula re-enacting the Titanic!

Beachy Bellows BBQ

Last weekend, we visited the lovely beach at Bellows for a BBQ and some body boarding.
Amanda, me, Paula, Kerry, and Annette

I, the chicken that I am, did not participate in the body boarding challenge because there were numerous Portuguese Man-of-War also visiting the beach that day. We had a great time though- lots of good food, great company, beautiful weather (perfect for lounging around), and bocci ball tournaments!

Jeff catches some zzz's in the hammock!

Big Island for Molly's BDay

In honor of Hawai'i's 50th anniversary of becoming a state, I didn't have to work last Friday, so I flew to the Big Island for some sunsets, field day games and pub peddling. It was my friend Molly's birthday and she had some fun festivities planned for her big day!

We landed in Hilo just in time to rent a car and take a trip to Mauna Kea for the sunset. It was only my second time up the volcano, so it still amazed me how lunar the landscape looks!

The summit of Mauna Kea is around 14,000 feet, so we had to pass through the clouds on our way up. Here's a view looking down to some of the observatories.

Even though it was August, it was still really cold at the top! Very strange to go from 85 degrees at sea level to 40 degrees at the summit! I thought I had planned for enough layers, but I still had to run back to warm up in the refuge of the car every once in awhile! Here I am with the mountain shadow in the background (the sun sets on one side of Mauna Kea which casts a shadow on the other side- pretty cool!).

A spectacular view of the sunset!

From the warm shelter of the car, I kept running outside to capture the changes in the cloud formations- at one point, we saw a Apatosaurus (formerly known as a brontosaurus).

Self portrait of Molly and Me (Paula would be proud)!

There was an awesome moon that night too- absolutely beautiful!

The next day, Molly and I headed into town to help with party planning. I was sent off to the Hilo Market to pick up lunch and some fresh veggies. The farmer's market in Hilo is an institution and it's so cool to go and look at all the fruits and vegetables. I ran into two groups of people who commented on my Georgia Southern T-shirt- you never know where you are going to meet fellow southerners!

Molly's birthday celebration was in combination with another friend's birthday, so it was the 30 and over Solids vs. the 30 and under Polka-dots (we didn't actually have anyone fall in between, so I'm not sure what we would have done. Molly and I took our costumes very seriously.....what do you think of my cape?

There were lots of field day games including a water balloon toss......
a hula hoop game (to win, each team had to hold hands and then pass the hula hoop around the entire team).....

and an egg toss.....here's the before......

and here's the after......

It was so much fun playing in the park that day. We had lots of little kids running up to see what we were up to and we got some of them to play (they must not have field day here!).

After the last of the games, we began the scavenger hunt/pub peddle at Coqui's Hideaway (Science Info for the day: coqui frogs were accidentally introduced to the Big Island from Puerto Rico. They have thrived and multiplied and out compete many of the other native amphibians).
We had clues that led us to each site around town and we all had bicycles (or 1 skateboard) to get from spot to spot. We weren't allowed to leave each bar though without completing a task such as walking backwards, talking completely in a made-up language or singing a Michael Jackson tribute song at the karaoke club....
We ended the night with snacks at Ken's Diner- I had the Macadamia Nut Pie! Delicious! Oddly enough, Molly and I matched the decor!

Thanks Molly for a fun weekend and a little R and R on the Big Island!

Bienvenido a Miami

I am very excited to announce that I have accepted a Senior Research Associate position with the University of Miami's Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science coral restoration program. While I am sad to leave Hawai'i, my wonderful friends and my job of cruising around, having fun and diving on the phenomenal reefs of the Pacific, this will be a wonderful opportunity to return to experimental research and serve as a project manager. I will begin my new job in Miami on October 15th, but will be leaving home on Sept. 15th to visit my family in Germany to celebrate my niece’s 1st birthday (I can’t believe that a year ago I became Auntie Steffers)! I will keep you all posted on what's happening and I look forward to sharing my experiences as I start another cross country chapter in my life!
